Biography

Huang Xueqin is a journalist and #MeToo advocate. In a 2019 interview she recalled interning at China News Service in 2009, working at its Guangzhou branch after graduation, and reporting for New Express from 2013 to 2015 before independent journalism and anti-harassment work.[7]

In her oral history, Huang recalled that discussions with women journalists during a 2017 visit to the National University of Singapore helped prompt her survey. She later connected interviewees with lawyers, psychological support and other resources, and participated in gender-awareness training for lawyers.[7]

Between October 20 and November 25, 2017, Huang surveyed women journalists and collected 416 valid responses. Of those respondents, 83.7 percent reported sexual harassment. Published in March 2018, the report combined questionnaires and interviews to examine newsroom power, barriers to complaints and prevention measures. The percentage describes the participating sample.[6]

She was detained in October 2019, subsequently placed under residential surveillance at a designated location and released in 2020. She and labor activist Wang Jianbing were taken away in Guangzhou on September 19, 2021. Their case was tried in September 2023, and she received a five-year sentence in June 2024.[2][1]

Her appeal was rejected in September 2024; supplementary penalties included four years’ deprivation of political rights and confiscation of 100,000 yuan. The Rights Practice’s October 5, 2026 update reports release on September 18.[2][3][8]

Case Summary

Huang and Wang Jianbing were taken away on September 19, 2021, and tried on September 22, 2023. Huang received five years for inciting subversion in June 2024, with four years’ deprivation of political rights and confiscation of 100,000 yuan.[2][1][3]

Sources differ on the first-instance date, June 13 or 14, and appeal date, September 10 or 12. The Rights Practice’s subsequent update records release after completion of sentence on September 18, 2026.[2][1][3][8]

The survey ran through November 25 and obtained 416 valid responses; 83.7 percent of respondents reported experiencing sexual harassment. Special Procedures and Amnesty give June 14 and China’s reply June 13; all record a five-year term.

This sentence belongs to the case following her removal with Wang Jianbing in September 2021, not the earlier 2019 detention. It included four years’ deprivation of political rights and confiscation of 100,000 yuan. Special Procedures and Amnesty give June 14 for sentencing, whereas the government reply gives June 13; the profile does not force those accounts into a single day.[1][2][3]

The appeal upheld the original judgment. The UN communication gives September 10; China’s reply gives September 12.[2][3]

2026-09-18

Release recorded in organization’s update

The Rights Practice’s October 5 update records release on this date after completion of sentence.

The September 15 joint appeal preceded the expected end of her sentence. The Rights Practice’s October 5 follow-up subsequently reported release on September 18. That later update, rather than sentence arithmetic or the advance appeal, supports the release entry. It does not allow the archive to establish all subsequent conditions of movement, expression or daily life.[8][5]
