Summary
Description
The detention in 2019 and the case beginning in 2021 were separate stages. Huang and Wang Jianbing were taken away on September 19, 2021, and tried on September 22, 2023. Huang received five years for inciting subversion in June 2024, with four years’ deprivation of political rights and confiscation of 100,000 yuan.[2][1][3]
Sources differ on the June 2024 sentencing and September appeal dates. After the September 15, 2026 joint appeal, The Rights Practice updated its page on October 5 to report Huang’s release on September 18.[2][1][3][6]
Before this case, Huang had investigated sexual harassment in the media and supported survivors speaking publicly. Her 2018 report used 416 valid questionnaire responses and interviews to examine barriers to complaints and newsroom prevention measures.[5]
