Description
In 1987 Wang was punished alongside Fang Lizhi and Liu Binyan during the anti-liberalization campaign. He was again imprisoned after supporting students in 1989.[1][2]
Wang hoped to return to China but died in New York on December 19, 2001. RFA’s memorial interviews discuss his exclusion, and later foundation materials preserve colleagues’ recollections of his writing and activities.[2][1]
Developments
Expelled from the Party
Wang was expelled from the Party during the anti-liberalization campaign alongside Fang Lizhi and Liu Binyan. Earlier punishment had not ended his criticism, and renewed imprisonment followed support for students in 1989.[2]

RFA’s retrospective records Wang’s move to the US, subsequent advocacy for laid-off workers and wish to return home.[2]
