APS published a first-person account in October 1996 based on a May 19 interview with Liu. He recalled the influence of Einstein, Galileo, Curie and Fang Lizhi’s teaching, emphasizing scientific inquiry and integrity. Liu said he opposed the May 1989 hunger strike, favored ending the occupation by month’s end and left the square on May 30. He also described release to his parents’ home on June 18, 1995, subsequent surveillance and rejection of an application to open a bookstore.[1]

Dui Hua recounts imprisonment in Lingyuan, release on June 18, 1995, departure for the US in 1996 and subsequent technology and finance work alongside democratic advocacy.[3]
