Biography
Du Daobin is a Hubei internet essayist who criticized political and social problems.[2]
Du’s online writing addressed politics, policy and media control, including an argument that state control of news violated the constitution. CPJ links his 2004 conviction to articles on Chinese and overseas websites.[2]
CPJ reports continuing petitions against the conviction, repeated questioning, monthly reporting and travel-permission requirements during probation.[2]
Case Summary
After the June 11, 2004 suspended sentence, an August appeal upheld the conviction. CPJ’s 2008 report describes recalculation of probation from the appellate date, extending it, and questions about that decision from counsel and PEN contacts.[2][1]
Police took him from work on July 21, 2008, reportedly alleging probation violations and continued writing. Lawyer Mo Shaoping said he was unaware of necessary supporting court documents.[2]
