Description

Amnesty records arrest in November 2004, ten years’ imprisonment in April 2005 and two years’ deprivation of political rights, alongside reports of family pressure, prison labor and health concerns.[1]

Shi was released on August 23, 2013 and subsequently thanked Amnesty supporters for assistance to him and his mother.[1][2]

Developments

Detained

Shi emailed a summary of instructions to downplay the June Fourth anniversary in April and was arrested in November. Amnesty connects the content to newsroom censorship and later use of account information as evidence.[2][1]

Sentenced to ten years

Shi received ten years in April and two years’ deprivation of political rights on a state-secrets charge. Amnesty identifies Yahoo user information as part of the evidence and notes the company’s local-law response, raising press-freedom and corporate-responsibility questions.[1][2]

Released early

Amnesty and CPJ record release after more than eight years. Shi later thanked Amnesty supporters.[1][2]
