Summary
Official notices announced an investigation on April 7, 2020 and Party expulsion and referral for prosecution on July 23. On September 22 the court announced 18 years and a 4.2 million yuan fine for four economic offenses. HRW argued that the case suppressed dissent and questioned procedural safeguards. A 2024 family letter sought medical parole and overseas treatment; CNA relayed further health and treatment concerns in 2026. Original medical records remain unavailable for independent assessment.[1][2][3][5][6][8]
Description
An essay attributed to Ren circulated in early 2020, criticizing delayed outbreak information, media control and concentrated political power. CDT’s reproduction is dated March 12 and explicitly identifies its heading as editorial. HRW subsequently linked March custody to the essay.[7][5]
On April 7, Xicheng authorities announced disciplinary review and supervisory investigation without specifying initial custody or criminal-arrest dates. The July 23 notice listed political-discipline and economic allegations, announced Party expulsion and referred suspected crimes to prosecutors.[1][2]
On September 22 the court announced convictions for embezzlement, bribery, misappropriation of public funds and abuse of power by state-company personnel, with a combined 18-year term and 4.2 million yuan fine. It said Ren admitted all charges and would not appeal. The preserved notice was carried by Beijing Daily’s client and reproduced by Sina Finance.[3]
HRW called for the verdict to be overturned, arguing that economic charges suppressed dissent. It dated the trial to September 9, described closed proceedings and questioned choice of counsel and the adequacy of public evidence. The court’s confession account and these procedural concerns have different sources.[5]
On October 3, 2024, RFA reported a letter dated October 2 from Ren’s daughter and said an anonymous source verified its authorship. It described declining health and treatment difficulties, sought medical parole and overseas care, and promised that Ren would cease public commentary abroad. These were family requests and statements, without medical records available for independent comparison.[6]
On October 6, 2026, CNA relayed Yaita Akio’s account from the previous day, citing unnamed informants on suspected prostate cancer, worsening health and unmet examination and treatment requests. No medical originals or independent examination accompanied the account.[8]
The complete judgment, transcript, independent defense materials, medical originals and any medical-parole approval have not been obtained. The record addresses expression, trial safeguards and custodial healthcare while distinguishing procedural announcements from assessments and attributed accounts. The date range ends with the included October 6, 2026 report, not a release or closure.[3][5][6][8]
